About Art in Tanzania
Art in Tanzania (AIT) is a community-development NGO founded in 1996, working across education, health, environment, and livelihoods. Based in Madale Village, 30 km from Dar es Salaam, we host 20–35 international students and interns at any time, from a wide range of disciplines and nationalities.
About the role
The NGO Management Internship is a hands-on placement inside a functioning African NGO. You’ll take on an integrated role across project management, communications, fundraising, HR, and operations — customized to your academic background, professional experience, and any requirements from your home institution.
What you’ll do
- Plan and implement community programs, run on-site monitoring visits, and evaluate the impact of development initiatives.
- Draft operational reports, coordinate logistics for workshops and events, and prepare stakeholder updates.
- Manage social media, produce video and blog content, and design outreach materials (our Facebook audience is 50,000+)
- Contribute to grant proposals, fundraising campaigns, and donor outreach
- Support local staff and coordinate international volunteers in a cross-cultural team
- Conduct research and needs assessments to inform program design
- Develop and deliver training for local staff and community members
- Prepare evidence-based impact reports for donors and partners
Depending on your background, you may also work across AIT’s focus areas (early childhood, human rights, CSR, environmental advocacy, climate change adaptation), the Tanzanian Youth Football Academy, applying AI in NGO workflows, or NGO revenue-generation strategy.
How the placement works
Every placement is fully customized. Each Monday, your supervisor prepares a written weekly work plan; each Friday, you submit a short report that feeds into next week’s planning. Supervisors are on-site every working day, and some live at the compound.

Logistics & funding
- Stipend — interns receive a USD $50 monthly stipend — modest, but equivalent to about twice Tanzania’s national minimum wage, reflecting AIT’s commitment to participant welfare.
- Location — Umoja Road, Block 2Q, Madale Village, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
- Start dates — flexible, year-round; adjustable after booking.
- Funding — qualifies as an Erasmus+ training placement — funding may cover part or all of your costs. Contact your student/international office early, ideally before you travel.
- Visa support — AIT issues an official Charity Invitation Letter and guides you through the E-VISA application.
