Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center Graduate Advisor Internship
WHAT IS THE ESAK’TIMÁ NATIVE STUDENT RESOURCE CENTER?
The Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center serves all Sacramento State community members and allies regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin, who are interested in Native culture, heritage, and life. Across Sacramento State and in the community, the Center is committed to holding space to cultivate collaboration to address the unique and diverse needs of Native students and issues impacting these communities.
WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS?
The Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center provides supportive services for students to assist them in their academic journey with Academic Advising, Academic Workshops, Peer Advising, Scholarship referrals, Cultural Presentations and Workshops, Student Leadership opportunities and Campus and Community Resources. We strive to make the Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center a home away from home where Native American values as a student are recognized, their student accomplishments are celebrated and their contributions to our community are honored. The Center is an open and inclusive gathering space for all students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•Graduate student at Sacramento State with a minimum 3.0. GPA in Counselor Education, Social Work, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies or any other related discipline.
•Demonstrated general knowledge of the unique traits found among Native American/Alaska Native, first-generation college students and the desire to work with students from diverse backgrounds
•Experience advising students in academics, leadership development, student service support areas, and CSU graduation requirements is a plus
•Ability to work independently and in a group setting in addition to coordinating many different tasks.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills, professional etiquette, and interpersonal skills
•Demonstrated familiarity with Microsoft Office and internet research engines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Graduate Intern will be responsible for the following:
•Conducting mentoring and advising sessions with program students
•Facilitate workshops for all program students. Potential topics of discussion include: self-exploration, decision-making and goal setting, graduate school, studying abroad, scholarship application filing, leadership development, etc.
•Help with student development concerns with the supervision of a lead counselor
•Hold individual office hours and advising sessions on a weekly basis to assist students
•Assist the Center staff with program planning aspects related to university life
•Provide academic advising and create general education plans with students and assist with class schedule planning and registration
•Attend weekly Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center retention meetings to ensure the success of Native students.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
•Interns should be available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm M-F.
•The minimum work periods are in 4-hour blocks of time.
•The internship is a one academic year commitment.
•The work is performed in an office environment with continuous contact with students, staff, the campus community, the public, and other agencies.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
• Interns will be expected to assist Esak’timá Native Student Resource Center during program events, activities and conferences.
• Assist the Assistant Vice President of Student and other Staff with other duties as requested.
